Furniture Elegance builds wooden furniture in solid pine and birch plywood from a workshop in Tustin, California, and ships it flat across the United States. Prices run from $13 for a plant stand to $390 for a dining set with four chairs.
Why we started
Cheap furniture is usually particle board with a photograph of wood stuck to the outside. Once that film chips there is nothing underneath and the piece goes to the kerb. We wanted to sell real wood at the same price, which means pine rather than oak, and a box you put together yourself rather than a truck with two people on it.
Where the price comes from
- Pine instead of hardwood. It grows fast and costs a fraction of oak or walnut.
- It ships flat. A boxed wardrobe costs a quarter of an assembled one to freight.
- One finish across the whole range, so nothing goes through the shop twice.
- Standard mattress and doorway sizes, so nothing is cut to order.
- No showroom, so you are not paying for retail floor space.
- Common off the shelf hardware, which is why a replacement part costs us almost nothing.
The honest trade off
Pine dents more easily than oak. If you want something to hand down to a grandchild, buy hardwood and pay four times as much. If you are furnishing a first place, a rental or a room that will change in a few years, this is the better buy and we would rather say so plainly.
